Last weekend we went to Vigo, which is a town very close to Portugal an hour and a half away. It was a wonderful city built on a very hilly, very beautiful coast. It was the first sunny day we'd had in a few weeks.

First view of Vigo.

The girls and I.
In general, Vigo was wonderful. I want to go back on one of my free weekends in April or May when it is hopefully a bit warmer. The two girls in the anchor picture with me are Helen and Kelsea, who along with two guys Paul and Taylor, are my core group of friends. The five of us are doing basically all of our traveling together. Helen, Kelsea and Taylor all go to KU and Paul goes to Kenyon College in Ohio. To say the least, we have all become a tight knit group... all the Americans here have become my family away from home. Last night, for instance, about 15 friends came over to Fattin and my apartment and we had a huge potluck dinner feast, and then all went out together afterwards. Its wonderful to know how many great friends I am making, and how, when I go back to KU, I will still have these fantastic people around (minus Paul and a few other girls from Kenyon. We are trying to convince Paul to come visit Kansas though...).
All in all, I am having a good time. We are going to Pontevedra (another Spanish coastal town) tomorrow, so I will hopefully have some pictures from that. I love you and miss you all!

Yea! You're going to the Guggenheim! It's an amazing building and is easily one of the most influential of it's generation. You'll enjoy it. While you're there, make sure to check out the series sculptures by Richard Serra. They have the largest space in the building to themselves, you can't miss them. They're these gigantic bent/rolled steel pieces that you walk into/through. Each one is torqued in a different way so the experience is drastically different spatially, even though all are similar. Amazing experience.
ReplyDeleteIf I could be so bold as to suggest a couple other places to check out:
Barcelona: no matter what, you've GOT to see these. They're among the most popular tourist attractions in the city so you were probably going to see them anyway.
-La Sagrada Familia- church that been under construction for 120 years and will probably take another 100 to finish. Absolutely beautiful. One of my favorite buildings of all time. Stunning.
-Park Gruell- it's awesome. It's on a hillside overlooking the city with the ocean in the distance.
-Las Ramblas-essentially a wide median/park that's a couple miles long and stretches from all the way to beaches. It's filled with sculptures and vendors selling everything imaginable: food, pets, touristy junk, art. If I could ask you a favor, take lots of pictures for me.
-The Beaches- a little crowded but still great.
Valencia:
Ciudad de las Artes y de las Ciencias- designed by Santiago Calatrava, one the best and most famous architects in the world. It's basically a collection of buildings in an old river channel including everything imaginable. We didn't have much time in Valencia so we only walked around and saw the outside of the buildings but did go to the aquarium. You could easily spend a day there and it wouldn't be enough. At least take a couple hours to walk around and see the outside of the buildings. Some awesome modern architecture, his projects always look like some sea creatures or the skeletons of animals...great stuff.
The Beach- there were jelly fish when we went but hopefully there won't be for you
-The old part of town- you'll find some great nooks and crannies.
...
And as a general rule of thumb, and I'm sure you've found it's true. Just walking everywhere you'll see some awesome stuff that won't ever be in any city guide and you'll get a better understanding of how people live.
sorry to hear about the Kings of Leon concert, that really sucks. Anyway, take care Katy! And have fun!
We miss ya,
Jeremy
Katy your travels sound so so exciting! You are such a stud! Let me know what weekend it is that you will be in London! Ask your friends from Kenyon if they know Fatty Fasano or Molly Yost! Such a small word! I hope everything is wonderful!
